Unless you have been holed up in a cave for the last few weeks, you can’t have failed to notice the media commotion surrounding David Beckham and his on-off move from England’s top soccer team, Manchester United, to Real Madrid, the equivalent in Spain.

The news that the deal had been made was finally announced on 18th June 2003 much to the dismay of hundreds of thousands of Manchester United fans around the world. England fans need not worry however as Beckham will still be captain of the national side in future matches.

To an American audience all this fuss may seem undeserved, but in a country where soccer is often the number one subject of conversation, information about the transfer of the most talked about player in history is big news. Add to this the fact that David Beckham is married to ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and you have a match made in media heaven.

The Beckhams have just finished a two-week promotional tour of the States, where they appeared on everything from the MTV Movie Awards to ABC’s 20/20. Newspapers wrote editorials about his proposed move and magazines ran picture spreads pages long. The fact that the media frenzy is spreading to the States may indicate that a country traditionally resistant to professional and international soccer, may be ready to embrace the culture and the stars which come with it.

The surprising success of ‘Bend It Like Beckham’, the film recently released in the States about two girls who play soccer, may also indicate this trend. There is still a long way to go, however, to get to the stage where a player’s potential transfer is front page news for weeks on end, as has been the case in the UK in recent weeks. Every detail of the transfer has been scrutinized in minute detail, with many trying to predict the outcome of the negotiations and what this will mean for the soccer world.

July 2nd 2003 saw the official unveiling of David Beckham in Madrid. The arrival of the star caused the city to come to a stand still as thousands of fans turned out to see the latest signing. Beckham will be wearing number 23, the same as his idol Michael Jordan. The two stars have the same management company, who will undoubtedly be promoting the number 23 from now on.
